Udoh Akpan serves on the board of the Oribamise Foundation, where he chairs the scholarship selection panel and owns the method behind every figure the foundation publishes.
He is an assistant professor of mathematics at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, where he works on partial differential equations and dynamical systems. His research is published with collaborators across the United States, Turkey, India, and Iran, and has been cited more than 270 times. He read for his first degree at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, and took his masters at Ohio University.
He took the seat because he has been through the exact sequence the Scholars program is built around: a Nigerian undergraduate degree, a graduate place abroad, and the cost of getting from one to the other. He sets the academic standard every applicant is assessed against, and he signs off the measurement behind every result the foundation reports, including the ones that fall short of target.
